Air conditioning sizing

Thumbs rule

For storage room (above 17 °C to 25 °C)

Cooling Load (TR-Ton of Refrigeration) = Total Volume (ft3) /1500 [wall, floor and roof considered casting floor]. If roof is Tin shed and PVC/Gypsum/Plastic board False ceiling than total cooling load (TR) = Total Volume (ft3) /1200.

Example: A storage room sized 30’X20’X15’. Need to maintain temperature below 25 °C by 24X7.

So, Total Cooling load = 9000/1500= 6 TR.

Considering 20% safety margin, Total Cooling load= 7.2 ≈7.5≈8 TR.

So, two split A/C with capacity 4 TR along with one standby AC with 3/3.5 TR is recommended.

Air conditioning sizing

Thumbs rule

For thermal comfort, Total cooling load (TR)

For thermal comfort, Total cooling load (TR) = 2(ab + bc + ca)/500, where, a= Length of condition room, ft; b= Width of condition room, ft and c= height of condition room, ft.

Example: A office room of 50’X40’X10’ need to setup air conditioning with normal thermal comfort. So, Total cooling capacity of Air conditioning cooling load will be 2[(50X40)+(40X10)+(10X50)]/500=11.6 Ton of Refrigeration.

Considering 20% safety factor, Total cooling Load = 13.92 TR≈14 TR.

So, Two Split AC with capacity 4 TR and rest two AC with capacity 3 TR will meet the thermal comfort of that office.

Thermal Insulation

  1. Duct insulation: Air conditioning with required temperature range 21-25 °C, need to do insulation with duct insulation, 25MM, K=<0.037 W/m-k,

  2. Air conditioning with required temperature range 21-25 °C, need to do insulation with duct insulation, 20MM, K=<0.037 W/m-k.
